I'm wondering if Medicare is considered a public or private insurance. Can someone clarify this for me?

Medicare is a public insurance program in the United States. It is administered by the federal government and provides health coverage for individuals who are 65 years old or older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. Medicare is funded through payroll taxes, premiums paid by beneficiaries, and general government revenue. It is important to note that while Medicare is a public program, there are also private insurance options available to supplement or replace traditional Medicare coverage. These private insurance plans, known as Medicare Advantage plans or Medicare Part C, are offered by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans provide all of the benefits of Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and often include additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, and hearing services. So, while Medicare itself is a public insurance program, individuals have the option to choose private insurance plans for their Medicare coverage if they prefer.
